Ego

« Back to Glossary Index

Ego is the central component of the self, through which individuals perceive their identity and how they fit into their group and society. Ego functions include self-awareness, self-image, and self-esteem. The term “ego” comes from Freud’s structural model of personality in which the ego mediates between the id (the source of instinctual forces) and superego (the conscience or moral sense).
