Epilepsy

« Back to Glossary Index

Epilepsy is a condition in which abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes seizures. These episodes may be brief or last a few minutes. They can vary from staring spells to violent convulsions, and the person may lose consciousness or have unusual behavior during a seizure. Epilepsies are characterized by the type of seizure, how often seizures occur, and their effect on a person’s daily life.
